Cougared.com is a niche dating site that specializes in bringing together younger girls and mature ladies for no strings dating. The mind-blowing thing is that it's absolutely FREE to join and use all features on the site. That's right: no hidden costs! Whilst it might not be quite as slick as some of the other subscription sites in this category, it still packs in all the practical features that can help you find a date and more.

It's tricky to resist the urge to trumpet the fact that a dating site like this one is 100% free, mainly because whilst most sites allow you to join and create a profile for free, there's little more you can do in terms of communicating with other members without taking out a subscription. For absolutely nothing, you simply get so much more here than any other site in this category. The site has something of a community feel to it and you can become more immersed in Cougared.com's blogs and forums if you're looking for more than dating.

It should also be stated that according to the site's intro blurb, Cougared.com is not a 'sex dating' site. Whilst it's possible to specify that you're looking for romance, most people seem to be looking for no-strings fun rather than something more committed. Women registered on the site do tend to be more mature, with many aged 40 and over. However, there's more of a spread of ages in the men. One of the potential pitfalls of joining a free dating site is that you're likely to come across more fake and inactive profiles than elsewhere, and there's no subscription option that might convey a sense of authenticity given that the member is paying to be here. So, despite the best efforts of the site staff to screen profiles, be prepared to do a bit of weeding as you browse.

Whilst it's free to join and literally takes a minute as long as you have a valid email address, be prepared to wait at least a few hours (usually longer) to be able to access the site fully. For example, until your profile is approved you can't view profiles, communicate or access most features. However, once your membership is given the nod, you're then granted access to everything on the site. Profiles are fairly detailed and set out on the page, but perhaps lacking the gloss of some of the subscription sites. Nonetheless. there's plenty of detail and the photo quality is good, if not quite that that of the sites at the top of this category. Most members come from the USA, Canada and Europe, but you'll find people from across the world. When we checked, there were around 800,000 or so registered and 5,652 online, so your chances of getting in touch and meeting someone special are good.

With reference to search features, you'll find a range of options (see above) allowing you to perform general searches or pinpoint something specific. The one-click tab searches are particularly useful for checking out who's online or checking out new members or new member content. To get in touch with other people there's plenty to choose from too. In addition to email and sending 'winks' (automated messages sent at the click of a mouse to establish contact with other members) you can also chat online using the instant messenger feature. Whilst there aren't any chat rooms, the inclusion of the messenger feature exceeds that provided by some of Cougared.com's competitors (e.g. iDateMilfs.co.uk). For those wanting to participate in community features, there's a site blog feature to which you can contribute your own thoughts or read the musings of others, including Agony Aunt Lucia's dating tips. You might also want to participate in member forums, where you can get to meet other members with likeminded interests. Both are great ways of getting your profile seen. For new members there's also a site tour, FAQs page and email support for those requiring further assistance.

Cougared.com puts many of its subscription dating sites to shame by offering a genuine niche dating site, more features (including IM chat) and a larger membership base for no charge.
